AN ANALYSIS OF THE TYPE OF DEIXIS USED BY THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE SCRIPT OF “THE FAREWELL”

Abstract


This study aims to determine the types of deixis and references used by the main character in the movie script "The Farewell", and to determine the dominant deixis used by the main character in the movie script "The Farewell". The writer uses qualitative methods in collecting data from this study. The results of this study found that there were 380 expressions deixis used by the main character in the movie script "The Farewell". The expression deixis is divided into five types of deixis, namely 304 person deixis, 12 place deixis, 9 time deixis, 35 social deixis, and 20 discourse deixis. In addition, the references found in this study are, the person deixis found are I, me, my, we, myself, and us as the first person deixis; you and your as second person deixis; it, she, he, her, him, they, and his as third-person deixis; the place deixis found are here, there, that, those, and this; the time deixis found are soon, then, the night, the morning, a few months ago, now, last week, and every time; the social deixis found were Mom, Dad, Mr. Li, cousin, grandmother, uncle, auntie, Little Nai Nai, Ms. Jin, Mrs. Ma, and Little Bao; and the last discourse deixis found is that, this, and these. The dominant deixis used by the main character in the movie script "The Farewell" is person deixis.
