Abstract

Macapat songs, as a Javanese cultural heritage, face challenges of relevance in the contemporary era marked by the dominance of popular culture and globalization. This study examines innovations in macapat song performances through collaboration with contemporary music as a revitalization strategy that continues to preserve traditional values. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzes the performance “Macapat Senja di Malioboro”, published on the YouTube platform, as the main object of study. Data were collected through visual and audio documentation of the performance recordings, which were then analyzed in depth to identify elements of innovation and the preservation of traditional values. The results indicate that modern musical arrangements incorporating jazz and pop elements successfully create a performance format that is more accessible to young audiences without eliminating the philosophical and aesthetic essence of macapat songs. This innovation is manifested in three main dimensions: instrumentation that combines traditional and modern musical instruments, vocal interpretation that blends traditional techniques with contemporary expressiveness, and performance contexts that utilize urban public spaces as arenas for intercultural dialogue.
